Academic information and tentative program of the courses

This program is multidisciplinary and is aimed at students, young graduates and senior professionals with a background in law, political sciences, international relations, philosophy, economics, environmental sciences, engineering and any other relevant discipline that can be related to the topics of the program.

The Program is divided into two curricula, which combine interrelated topics:

  • Summer Institute on Climate Change and Environmental Protection - (SICCEP)

This curriculum focuses more precisely on Law, Policy, Economics and Technology on Climate Change and Environmental issues: European and Chinese Perspectives. It addresses issues such as energy policies, environment law and sustainable development, intellectual property and technology innovation.

  • Summer Institute on Intellectual Property Rights and China - (IP-China)

This curriculum aims at giving an introduction to Chinese Law and Chinese Intellectual Property Law, and a comparative overview on European, American and Chinese Approaches to Intellectual Property and Competition Policy.

The early bird submission deadline to apply to both intakes of the Summer Law Institute in China 2020 is on December 31, 2019

Dates

The Summer Law Institute will be in Beijing (China) and will run two different intakes (dates to be confirmed):

  • 1st Intake: (IP-China and SICCEP)

It is an innovative program that takes into account the training demands of young professionals on these issues, drawing on relevant curricula received from international organizations and the private sector representatives. The participants that will enroll in all the scheduled courses and seminars will receive the certificates for both curricula.

The Summer Program has also a second and third intakes for those who would like to attend only one curriculum. In these cases the length of the program will be only two weeks.

  • 2nd intake: (IP-China)
  • 3rd intake: (SICCEP)

The second and third intakes are addressed to professionals (not to students or young graduates) who can not spend more than two weeks in China. The professionals who attend one curriculum during the previous edition will have special access to the second curriculum on the following edition 2020.

Note: China is a very particular and complex country, which presents massive differencies from Europe and Western World. In order to get a thorough understanding of the country and its culture, a minimum stay of at least one month is strongly encouraged.

Contents

Because of the number of hours of scheduled lecturers, preparatory academic materials and practical activities, this one month Summer Law Institute can be considered equivalent to a specialization or master program of at least one semester.

The summer course will include the following topics:

  1. Introduction to Chinese Law, Institutions & Politics (SICCEP and IP-CHINA)
  2. Environment, Science and Society: a Philosophical Introduction (SICCEP)
  3. Nudging the Dragon? Environmental Policy Making and Behavior Change in China (SICCEP)
  4. Law, Policy and Economics on Climate Change and Energy (SICCEP)
  5. Guest Speaker Module – Sustainable Development, Climate Change, Energy and Environmental Protection: an “On the Field” Perspective (SICCEP)
  6. Introduction to Chinese Intellectual Property Law and Technology Transfer (IP-CHINA)
  7. European American and Chinese Approaches to Intellectual Property Rights and Competition Policy (IP-CHINA)
  8. Internet Law (IP-China and SICCEP)
  9. Guest Speaker Module - Chinese Law and Intellectual Property Law: Lawyers and Practitioners Perspective

In addition to traditional lectures, the Summer Law Institute offers a number of presentations and round tables involving experts of Chinese law, politics and culture, environment, sustainable development and intellectual property as well as experts in the specific themes covered by the different classes (for a complete list of the events held during the Summer Law Institute, please see the events of the 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 editions). 

Seminars on IP Law and Competition Policy Law are also held, with the aim of increase teacher-student interaction and interaction among students of different nationalities. 

Including regular classes, roundtables, seminars, the participants will attend at least 60 hours per curriculum (for a total amount of 120 hours for both curricula).
