Maria del Mar Serrano Garcia – SLI participant in 2014

"I feel very fortunate to have met so many young, talented and lovely people."

Original Spanish language

My name is Mar Serrano, I am originally from Spain and last summer (July – August 2014) I had the immense chance to take part in the 9th Edition of the Summer Law Institute, which was held in Beijing University, a major Chinese academic institution. As a graduate in Law and Political Science, I immediately became interested in this stimulating program, which deals with environmental issues, intellectual property, as well as international relations between the European Union and China from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The multidisciplinary approach is indeed what makes this summer school a unique academic experience: subjects comprising both curricula (IP-China and SICCEP) are not studied in an isolated and unconnected manner. Rather, multiple and prominent connections are analysed from very diverse perspectives (law, economics, political science, philosophy, business, institutional perspectives), encouraging students to adopt a comprehensive and participatory approach.

From an academic point of view, the program of the Summer Law Institute is stimulating and current, and subjects comprised in both curricula and their sequentially appears to have been carefully chosen. IP-China would be therefore a window to discover the current Chinese reality and their divergences with the European and American systems, from a legal and institutional point of view, but also the socio-economic perspective, thanks to the continuous exchange with Professors, students and keynote speakers.

More specific and complex aspects of the Chinese legal system, such as the protection of intellectual property rights are further studied in this block. Subsequently, SICCEP covers environmental, technological and energy challenges facing our society today, and China’s position in this regard, which is of significant importance due its economic, productive and demographic weight.  It is worth to mention the high quality and brilliance of the lecturers and speakers, again from diverse backgrounds, disciplines and academic traditions, led by Professor Paolo Farah, director of the programme.

My involvement as a researcher was yet another absolutely fundamental part of my academic experience in Beijing, since I was very fortunate to be part of a group of young researchers, from different European and non-European countries, closely supervised and receiving insightful advice by Professor Farah. In particular, I am conducting research and drafting a paper on environmental aspects of preferential trade agreements, still in progress.

Last but not least, a very dear recollection from my stay in Beijing are the close relationships with other fellow students, developed from the everyday life together and sharing the discovery of the stunning and awe-inspiring capital of China.  I feel very fortunate to have met so many young, talented and lovely people.

For all these reasons and many other that I do not recount because all the details fly from my memory, I strongly recommend the participation in the Summer Law Institute to all those with a thirst for a worthwhile and gratifying academic and personal experience.
