“A romantic collaboration of scientific and technological ideology with legal framework”
While accomplishing my master’s degree from Pakistan, I was keenly searching for some opportunities to grasp the world and to widen my neurological approaches to start climbing my success ladder. I found Summer Law Institute through my searches. First time, I applied for SLI in 2012. I was rejected to be a potential candidate for the program. The curriculum outline, especially intellectual property rights, attracted me much that I applied again in 2013 while I was a PhD scholar in Shanghai Jiao Tong University - China, an ultimate aim. I was interviewed and did not get complete financial assistance, thus, I failed to join the program.
After a long time, in middle of the night, I was returning from my lab and found an active call from an unknown number on my cell phone. He was Prof. Farah. I was eager to be in Beijing after knowing that I have been selected for SLI 2014 with an additional supplementary month as a research associate. I was thinking for the whole night “how could I be selected for SLI 2014 although I did not apply this time”. At last, the day came when I received the answer from Prof. Farah, after joining the SLI. My credentials were being assessed by SLI team every time and they found the right time to intervene into my routine to offer me a place in both the curricula.
I must admit the difficulties for scientists to overcome with the legal language and terminologies, but a little effort can make it possible. I also found tough time in the start but individual conversations with professors helped me a lot to understand the basics. The rest was done by my curse to learn more. Both the curriculums (SICCEP and IP-China) were designed and organized fabulously. One can gain the knowledge from brilliant professors, experience from successful industrialists and novelty from entrepreneurs. Everything was new to me, because I was heading in laboratory research without concerning legal difficulties in environment (A usual attitude of most environmental scientists).
Started with basic knowledge of Environmental protection act of Pakistan, I passed the curriculum by furnishing myself to communicate in terms of global environmental issues and the legal framework to deal with those issues. I learned how to approach legal environmental issues and I absorb how to esteem myself from the group of other scientists in my competition. I learned to protect scientific innovations through patent or to be a small entrepreneur through trade secret. I observed in my surroundings that scientists know about these things but after possessing a handsome work experience and exploring the world by joining different platforms, where they meet the experts of their field and get guidance. I grasp these things before the start of my career and I believe that I can polish these skills with time and experience.
The Summer School was intensive with linear routine, but dynamic experience of meeting different experts make it attractive to get your way progressively. The literature was garnished by practical experiences of professionals and guest speakers. I learned a lot of motivational views from professors and creative ideas from fellow students during class assignments and combine projects. I also learned the art of spontaneous dialogues with logical reasoning through class activities.
Individual mentoring was one of the glories of the program, where experienced mentor (Prof. Farah) guided about the future endeavours that could be achieved. A lot of students started to work based on SLI reference. I was a PhD scholar thus did not response to any of the position. Despite of that, I came across a surprising offer during my mentoring sessions. I was given an opportunity to collaborate with a research project sponsored by UNESCO, EU, China and USA. Although the project was far away from science and was related to legal offence of counterfeit products, there worked the experience of novel thoughts. Discussion with Prof. Farah furnished my views to think and to relate that project with science to broaden and to strengthen the impact of that project. That’s what I got from SLI and I realized that my selection was not random but planned, and I also realized the significance of selection call at an appropriate time with a target oriented objective.
Apart from educational proceedings, I enjoyed the unforgettable time with students and researchers of other nationalities. Somehow, I learned the basics of their cultures and languages. Whenever I visit web of SLI, I find our group photo. I sit beside my computer, look at the tree out of my window, memorize all the names and flash back into Beijing. Sitting with friends, at a quiet place among the busiest night streets of Beijing, chilled drinks in hands and sharing the life experiences was the glorious moment I captured in my memory.

پاکستان سے اپنی ماسٹرز کی تعلیم کی تکمیل کے اختتامی ایام میں، اپنی اعصابی نقطہ نظر اور وسعتوں کو بڑھانے ااور دنیا کی رفتار سے ملنے کے لےُکچھ مواقع تالش کر رہا تھا کہ کامیابی کی سیڑھی چڑھنا شروع کرسکوں. میں نے اپنی تالش کے ذریعے سمر الء انسٹیٹیوٹ پایا۔ پہلی بار، میں نے پروگرام کے لئے ایک ممکنہ امیدوار بننے کے لئے2012میں سمر الء انسٹیٹیوٹ کے لئے درخواست کی مگر ادارے کی جانب سے مسترد کر دی گیُ . نصاب خاکہ، خاص طور پر حقوق ملکیت دانش کی کشش نے مجھے دوبارہ درخواست دارُ کرنے پر اتنا مجبور کیا کہ میں نے 2013میں ،جبکہ میں پی-ایچ-ڈی کا طالب علم تھا، دوبارہ درخواست دی۔ مجھ سے تفصیلی سوال و جواب کےُگےُپر مجھے مکمل مالی تعاون نا
ملنے کی وجہ سے میں نصاب میں شمولیت سے قاصر رہا۔ ایک طویل وقت کے بعد، رات کے درمیان میں، میں اپنی لیبارٹری سے واپس آ رہا تھا کہ میرے موبائل فون پر ایک نامعلوم نمبر سے ایک فعال کال پایا گیا- وہ پروفیسر فاراہ تھے۔ میں ایک ریسرچ ایسوسی ایٹ کے طور پر ایک اضافی ضمنی مہینے کے ساتھ سمر الء انسٹیٹیوٹ 2014کے لئے منتخب کیا گیا ہوں، یہ جان لینے کے بعد بیجنگ میں ہونے کا بے صبری سے انتظار کرنے لگا تھا.ساری رات یہ سوچنے اور کھوجنے میں گذر گیُ کہ میں سمر الء انسٹیٹیوٹ 2014کیسے منتخب ہو سکتا ہوں جبکہ میں نے اس بار درخواست دارُ ہی نہی کی۔ آخر وہ دن آیا جب مجھے سمر الء انسٹیٹیوٹ میں شمولیت کے بعد پروفیسر فاراہ سے جواب موصول ہوا. میری اسناد سمر الء انسٹیٹیوٹ کے نما ُندوں کی جانب سے ہر بار جانچ پڑتال کی جا رہی تھی اور بآلخر انہوں نے میرے معمول میں مداخلت کرنے کا اور دونوں نصاب میں مجھے ایک جگہ فراہم کرنے مناسب اور صحیع وقت پا لیا.
سائنسدانوں کو قانونی زبان اور اصطالحات میں انتہایُ مشکالت کا سامنا کرنا کچھ عجیب بات نہیں ہے، لیکن ایک چھوٹی سی کوشش کے ساتھ اس پر قابو پانا بہت آسان ہے. میں نے بھی آغاز میں مشکالت کا پایا لیکن پروفیسروں کے ساتھ انفرادی مکالمات نے مبادیات کو سمجھنے کے لئے میری بہت مدد کی- مزید سیکھنے کے لیے میرے اپنے شوق نے حوصلہ افضایُ کی۔ کویُ ہونہار پروفیسروں، کامیاب اور ادیم صنعتکاروں اور انٹرپرینیور کے تجربے سے بہت سا علم حاصل کر سکتا ہے. سب کچھ، میرے لئے نیا تھا کیونکہ میں لیبارٹری تحقیق میں سرگرم تھا بغیر ماحول میں قانونی مشکالت کے بارہ میں غور کیے )سب سے زیادہ سائنسدانوں کی ایک معمول رویہ(. پاکستان کے ماحولیاتی تحفظ ایکٹ کے بنیادی علم
کے ساتھ نصاب پڑھنا شروع کر دیا، آخر کار میں نے عالمی ماحولیاتی مسائل اور ان مسائل سے نمٹنے کے لئے قانونی فریم ورک کے اعتبار سے بات چیت کرنا سیکھا اور نصاب کے تمام مراحل کو بخوبی انجام پایا. میں نے قانونی ماحولیاتی مسائل سے رجوع کرنے کا طریقہ سیکھا اور میں نے اپنے مقابلہ میں دوسرے سائنسدانوں کے گروپ سے خود اعتمادی کے کے اعتبار سے در پیش مساعل کا سامنا کرنا اور ان کو حل کرنا سیکھا۔ میں نے پیٹنٹ کے ذریعے سائنسی اختراعات کو تحفظ فراہم کرنے یا تجارتی راز کے ذریعے ایک چھوٹا سا کاروباری ہونا سیکھ لیا. میں نے اپنے کیریئر کے آغاز سے پہلے ان چیزوں کو سمجھا اور وقت اور تجربے کے ساتھ ان کی مہارت بڑھا سکتا ہوں.
موسم گرما کے اسکول لکیری معمول سے تیز تھی، لیکن مختلف ماہرین کو پورا کرنے کے متحرک تجربے آہستہ اپنا راستہ حاصل کرنے کے لئے یہ کشش بنا. ادب پیشہ ور افراد اور مہمان مقررین کے عملی تجربات کی طرف سے آراستہ کیا گیا تھا. میں نے کالس اسائنمنٹس کے دوران پروفیسروں اور ساتھی طالب علموں کی طرف سے تخلیقی خیاالت سے ترغیب خیاالت کی ایک بہت کچھ سیکھا اور منصوبوں کو یکجا. میں نے بھی طبقے کی سرگرمیوں کے ذریعے منطقی استدالل کے ساتھ خود رو مکالموں کا فن سیکھا.
انفرادی رہنمائی تجربہ کار سرپرست کی زیر صدارت پروگرام کی تابناکیاں میں سے ایک تھا. طالب علموں میں سے بہت سے سمر الء انسٹیٹیوٹ ریفرنس کی بنیاد پر کام شروع کر دیا. میں پی ایچ ڈی سکالر، اس طرح کی پوزیشن میں سے کسی کے جواب نے نہیں کیا تھا. اس بات کا باوجود میں نے اپنا رہنمائی سیشن کے دوران ایک حیرت انگیز پیشکش کے اس پار آیا. مجھے یونیسکو، یورپی یونین، چین اور امریکہ کی طرف سے سپانسر ایک تحقیقی پروجیکٹ کے ساتھ تعاون کرنے کا موقع دیا گیا تھا. اگرچہ وہ منصوبہ سائنس سے بہت دور تھا اور جعلی مصنوعات کی قانونی جرم سے متعلق تھا، ناول خیاالت کا تجربہ وہاں کام آیا. پروفیسر فاراہ کے ساتھ بحث اور سوچنے سے اس کام کو وسیع کرنے اور سائنس کے ساتھ کہ اس منصوبے سے متعلق کرنے اور یہ کہ اس منصوبے کے اثرات کو مضبوط کرنے کے اپنے خیاالت پیش. یہی ہے جو میں سمر الء انسٹیٹیوٹ سے مال اور میں اپنے انتخاب کے بے ترتیب لیکن منصوبہ بندی نہیں تھا احساس ہوا، اور میں نے بھی ایک ہدف پر مبنی مقصد کے ساتھ مناسب وقت پر سلیکشن کال کی اہمیت کا احساس کیا۔
عالوہ تعلیمی کارروائی سے، میں نے طالب علموں اور دیگر قومیتوں کے محققین کے ساتھ ناقابل فراموش وقت کا لطف اٹھایا. کسی نہ کسی طرح، میں نے ان کی ثقافتوں اور زبانوں کی ویب مالحظہ کرتا ہوں، میں نے اپنے گروپ فوٹو دیکھتا ہوں. میں اپنے کمپیوٹر سے ساتھ بیٹھ جاتا ہوں، اپنے کمرے کی کھڑکی سے SLIکی بنیادی باتیں سیکھیں. میں جب بھی باہر جھومتے درخت کو داکھتا ہوں، تمام دوستوں کے ناموں کو یاد کرتا ہوں اور بیجنگ کی حسین یادوں میں کھو جاتا ہوں۔ بیجنگ کی ایک ٹمٹماتی رات کو، مصروف ترین سڑکوں کے درمیان ایک پرسکون جگہ پر، دوستوں کے ساتھ بیٹھا، ہاتھوں میں ٹھنڈے مشروبات لیےُاور بہت دیر تک بیٹھے زندگی کے تجربات کا اشتراک کرنا میری گرفتار یادوں میں سے ایک شاندار پل تھا.
