In the collective imagination China is that other part of the world that you often dream of when you want to change your life: a country so different from Italy in terms of history, culture, language, and especially cooking, and which appears, particularly when we are talking about Sicilians, to be as far as the Moon. I have always been curious to find out everything about the Eastern world and maybe this inclination led me to complete the application form to attend the Summer Law Institute, which I came across quite by an accident.
My desire to discover this new world was certainly decisive, but my choice was also influenced by a considerable interest in the matters covered (an interest that grew exponentially by the end of the course). I would never have thought that this adventure, totally hypothetical at the moment of filling out the application form, I would then be transformed into reality.
Actually, I must admit that on the day when I was notified of the admission to the school I was gripped by fear, fear of the unknown. But with a bit of courage, for which today I am very grateful, I threw myself into this adventure. The initial impact was less traumatic than I expected, because it was amortized by the desire to see and visit everything that a huge city like Beijing could offer. But it was especially eased by the group of people, who would later become friends, whom I met when I arrived at the hotel.
Surely one of the most positive aspects of the Summer School were the people I met: not only for the personal relationships that were established between us, but also because of the unique opportunity to speak with people from different countries and cultures that opened up points of view and opinions far from my way of thinking.
However, the first moments being a tourist were interrupted by the start of the course. After the first weekend dedicated to the discovery of some of the historical sites in Beijing, I was thrown into that which would become my everyday life in the following 4 weeks: a reality made of current topics, such as intellectual property and environmental protection, which become paramount in a context such as the Chinese one characterized by counterfeiting the best international products and by urban pollution.
These themes developed during courses taught by professors of different nationalities and with the continuous involvement of students in the discussion (something that never happens in Italy) were deepened every day, so that we could develop reasoning skills and a critical approach to the various problems associated with the topic. The interventions of the special guests were also very useful.
Almost every day these guests taught us lessons that were characterized by a more practical approach to the issues treated from a theoretical point of view during the ordinary courses. The contribution by the professionals allowed me to think about what might be the practical implications of the issues covered during the course.
The courses were also complemented by the useful personal mentoring program, that is, face to face meetings with Prof. Farah aimed at enabling the student to understand what could be future job opportunities more in line with our own interests and inclinations. On Prof. Farah’s proposal, upon my return to Italy, I jumped at the chance to do an internship in an Italian law firm that deals mainly with IP Law.
In the end, all of these activities were certainly useful and interesting, but it must also be pointed out that they were quite challenging and time consuming. Therefore a piece of advice that I would give to those who want to participate in the next Summer School is definitely to stay in China for a few days after the end of the course in order to have time to visit other cities in addition to Beijing.
That said, I can only advise to anyone who wants to enrich his cultural and international experience not to hesitate for even a second to fill in the application form. And I say this not only because of the opportunities for learning and deepening many interesting themes that the course offers, but also, and especially, because Beijing is really a fun city and, if you have the same luck that I had to meet a fun and close-knit company, when you return home you'll tell me of Sanlitun.

Nell’immaginario collettivo la Cina rappresenta quell’altra parte del mondo che spesso si brama quando si ha voglia di cambiare vita: un paese tanto diverso dall’Italia per storia, cultura, lingua e soprattutto per cucina, che appare, specialmente quando a parlarne siamo noi siciliani, quasi lontano come la Luna. Io sono stato sempre curioso di scoprire tutto ciò che riguarda il mondo orientale e forse questa mia propensione mi ha portato a compilare la domanda di partecipazione al Summer Law Institute, nella quale mi sono imbattuto quasi per caso.
La voglia di conoscere questo nuovo mondo è stata senz’altro determinante, ma ha condizionato la mia scelta anche un discreto interesse per le materie trattate, interesse che tuttavia alla fine del corso sarebbe stato molto più intenso. Mai e poi mai però avrei pensato che quella avventura, assolutamente ipotetica al momento della compilazione della domanda, si sarebbe poi trasformata in realtà. Infatti non nascondo che il giorno in cui mi è stata comunicata l’ammissione alla scuola sono stato un po’ preso dalla paura, la paura dell’ignoto.
Ma con un pizzico di coraggio, del quale oggi sono molto riconoscente, mi sono buttato in questa avventura. L’impatto iniziale fu meno traumatico di quanto mi aspettassi, in quanto è stato ammortizzato dalla voglia di vedere e visitare tutto ciò che una città immensa come Pechino poteva offrirmi. Ma è stato soprattutto affievolito dal gruppo di persone, che poi sarebbero diventate amici, che ho incontrato non appena arrivato in hotel.
Sicuramente uno degli aspetti più positivi della Summer School sono state le persone che ho incontrato: oltre che per i rapporti personali che si sono instaurati tra di noi, è stato soprattutto utile confrontarmi con persone di paesi e culture diverse che mi hanno arricchito di punti di vista e di opinioni estranee al mio modo di pensare. Tuttavia i primi momenti da turista sono stati interrotti dall’inizio dei corsi. Infatti dopo il primo weekend all’insegna della scoperta di alcuni dei luoghi storici di Pechino, sono stato proiettato in quella che sarebbe diventata la mia realtà quotidiana nel corso delle seguenti 4 settimane: una realtà fatta di tematiche piuttosto attuali, quali la proprietà intellettuale e la tutela ambientale, che, in un contesto come quello cinese fatto di contraffazione dei migliori prodotti internazionali e di inquinamento cittadino, diventano di primaria importanza.
Queste tematiche, sviluppate a lezione da professori di varie nazionalità e con il coinvolgimento continuo di noi studenti alla discussione (cosa che in Italia non avviene mai), sono state giorno per giorno approfondite in maniera tale che sviluppassimo capacità di ragionamento e un approccio critico alle varie problematiche inerenti al tema. Parecchio utili sono anche stati gli interventi degli special guest che quasi quotidianamente ci hanno impartito delle lezioni che si caratterizzavano per un approccio più pratico alle problematiche trattate da un punto di vista teorico durante i corsi ordinari: l’intervento di questi professionisti infatti mi ha consentito di ragionare su quelle che potevano essere le implicazioni pratiche dei problemi trattati a lezione.
Ai corsi sono stati poi affiancati da programma gli utilissimi personal mentoring, cioè degli incontri faccia a faccia con il Prof. Farah volti a far sì che lo studente capisse quali potevano essere i futuri sbocchi lavorativi maggiormente in linea con i propri interessi e le proprie inclinazioni: appena tornato in Italia infatti, su proposta del Prof. Farah, ho colto al volo la possibilità di fare uno stage presso uno studio legale italiano che si occupa principalmente di IP Law. Alla fine dei conti tutte queste attività sono state sicuramente interessanti e utili, ma deve anche essere sottolineato che sono state abbastanza impegnative.
Pertanto un consiglio che mi sento di dare a chi vorrà partecipare alla prossima Summer School è sicuramente quello di fermarsi in Cina qualche giorno dopo la fine dei corsi così da avere il tempo di visitare anche altre città oltre Pechino. Detto questo, non posso che consigliare a chiunque voglia arricchire il proprio bagaglio culturale di un’esperienza internazionale di non esitare nemmeno per un secondo a compilare la domanda di partecipazione. E questo lo dico non solo per le occasioni di apprendimento e di approfondimento che il corso offre e delle quali ho già parlato, ma anche, e soprattutto, perché Pechino è veramente una città divertente e, se avrete la stessa fortuna che ho avuto io di incontrare una compagnia affiatata e che sa come divertirsi, al vostro ritorno mi racconterete di Sanlitun.
