Paola Cairoli – SLI Participant 2012

“Once overcame all the doubts [to stay far from Italy] I realized incredible value of this experience.”

Original Italian language

Several years after attending the Summer Institute in Beijing, I can say that that experience helped me strongly to improve to my university results and degree and to my professional life. Indeed, the Summer Institute gave me an international overview and the opportunity to interact with professionals and students coming from all over the world.

Moreover, thanks to the Summer Institute, I received an opportunity of an internship at Fair Trade Advocacy Office (FTAO), a non-governmental organization based in Brussels, which is directly dealing with the European Institutions. I had to decide whether to leave or not in a very short period and it has not been a simple decision because I was about to spend seven months away from Italy. However, once overcame all the doubts related to this choice, I realized incredible value of this experience.

A month I spent in Beijing has been both intense and relevant from an educational point of view: sometimes hard, with long days entirely devoted to study, lectures and exercises in class. However, I had the occasion to approach a different study method. I particularly appreciated time spent in Beijing for the possibility to exchange various points of view with people of my age coming from different countries.

The Summer School in Beijing has not only been an occasion to improve my knowledge, to complete my formation and to get in touch with people with other ideas and points of view, in order to widen my prospective. Last but not least, it has been my very first contact with China, a country which has become one of protagonists of the principal economic and social dynamics at global level.

Paolo Cairoli, January 2015
