“The great aspect of the summer school is that you feel warmly hugged by a big family, because once you have joined the network, there is no way out.”

Original Italian language

I decided to attend the Edition 2012 of the Summer Law Institute in China - Executive Education Training Program, while I was getting through a moment of confusion and doubts about my university career’s future steps.

The international and challenging environment I found and the people I met in China, helped me to understand definitively the path I wanted to run; once back in Italy, I soon took the decision to change my final dissertation’ issue and I chose a theme linked to the subject of international trade law, which was one of the main course held by Professor Farah in Beijing.

Besides this very particular and personal implication, whether I could go back in time I would doubtlessly draft the decision to attend the summer school, but perhaps I would go one year earlier.

My four weeks spent in Beijing have been essential under various points of view. First of all, the impact with a society still considered to be exotic by many Europeans, helped me to approach the “China World” from a different and more realistic perspective (this very point played a great advantage for me later on when it came to be selected for a position of legal company consultant for a joint venture project).

Secondly, the organization and schedule of the summer school, despite the fact to be very intensive, is dynamic and exciting by the multidisciplinary issue and by the multi- cultural participants. To have had the chance to talk and discuss with colleague of my age coming from countries listed as developing ones, gave me the opportunity to adopt broader methods of problem-solving and smarter skills of negotiation during the model of WTO_DSU’s panel.

Last but not least, I would like to remark the importance this experience played in my life under the perspective of interpersonal relations and networking: even though the summer school was not my first experience abroad (when I started the Summer Institute in China, I had just come back from a three-month traineeship at the Italian Embassy in Costa Rica), the 4 weeks spent in Beijing gave me the opportunity to get to know wonderful and high professional people, with whom I am still in contact.

The personal and professional skills I gained thanks to the experience at the Summer Law Institute have consistently contributed to broad my abilities, supplying me with an asset useful for the selection process at an international law firm and later on at the Technical Secretary of the Banking and Financial Arbitrator, Bank of Italy.

A special thanks to Professor Farah, who keeps on supporting, advising and helping us (his pupils) all through our careers and choices: the great aspect of the summer school is that you feel warmly hugged by a big family, because once you have joined the network, there is no way out.

Margaux Morganti
