"Studying in China: an opportunity for students and graduates"

Lingua originale italiana

My decision to apply for the “Summer School in China executive education training program”, started inJuly 2012,following many hesitations due to the geographical and cultural distance of the destination, together with a sort of concern for the efforts required to attend the classes. However, the interest for the topics of the lessons (Environmental Law and Intellectual Property Rights in a comparative perspective) along with my curiosity towards a developing country like China eventually prevailed over my initial uncertainties.

The opportunity to discover Beijing gradually during the Summer Law Institute were at the same time demanding and exciting. The city, at the beginning unknown and quite hostile, was disclosing itself day by day revealing a suggestive combination of fascination and contradictions of very powerful impact. In the meantime the classes were quite intensive and characterized by a mixture of academic lessons - taught by professors from different backgrounds - class discussions and workshops that usually ended late at night. During this intense period I also had the opportunity to get in contact with other students and graduates - whom I still remain in contact with - who expressed different approaches and experiences that have stimulated me to change my mind and expand my perspectives.

This effective mixture between school and personal skills, in my opinion, represents the value added of this kind of experience: on one hand the analysis of actual topics by means of a captivating teaching method, on the other the possibility to make a direct comparison with a reality that required comprehension and adaptability. In this way, attending the SLI has redefined my certainties and, at the same time, has represented an unrepeatable chance to face topics and needs which were still unknown to me.

Moreover, the relationship with professionals who live and work in China, together with the frequent round tables within the class and the tutorial system, have encouraged me to focus my interests and to make relevant choices for my future career. In this respect, thanks to the Summer programme I had the opportunity to combine my interest for the environmental issues with an in-depth analysis of the tax law and so I could start a professional partnership with an international law firm as tax consultant, especially oriented in VAT Law and environmental taxes fields. During this partnership, I could verify how the approach learned during the SLI can become a useful instrument to deal with a system characterized by the sharing of works and results.

The month spent in China has been an incentive to grow up and a significant improvement of my studies. From this perspective I want to stress that, despite the internalization of the Italian Law Schools is still being partially finished, many opportunities are already available in order to support Italian students to improve the skills needed to understand the complexity of the modern scenario. This approach is just a further learning opportunity that, certainly, cannot substitute the traditional academic education, but, on the other hand, can provide an interesting completion of one’s personal study plan that might be very useful in the next future. So enjoy your visit!
