Vittorio Mussetto – Participant of 2011

“This experience gave me a lot ... an approach more critical and proactive towards law studies and an attitude more cosmopolite and international”.

I took part in the 2011 Summer School, attending two different curricula: IP and Environmental Law. The decision was due to my interest in the subjects of international trade and developing economies. I have already had experiences abroad, but this Summer School represented a great change, both in terms of learning and of personal development.

The multicultural environment which characterized the class (with students coming from Europe, Africa, America and China) inspired dialogue and debate above the subject matters presented by the teachers. The teaching method has also been significantly different to the one I was used to at my university in Italy – a deep and continuous interaction between student and teacher, not a learning by heart of the juridical concepts but a critical review which thus allowed a greater understanding of the topics – being moreover truly interesting and certainly not boring. This in the context of the Chinese culture – a world so far from Europe, a way of life perhaps mysterious to Western eyes, but indeed fascinating.

This experience gave me a lot. Not only a new study method, an approach more critical and proactive towards law studies, but also (and the most importantly) an attitude more cosmopolite and “international”, which gave me a motivation (and tools) to undertake other challenges. Thanks to the contacts and network of agreements offered by the Summer Law Institute in China in terms of opportunities of internships, job offers and research period abroad offered in favour of the former participants of the Summer program in China, immediately after the SLI, I spent three months as a researcher in USA at Harvard Law School, being involved in an European research project regarding to trends of Chinese law towards non-trade concerns. Once back home, I decided to pursue my studies of developing economies with a thesis degree on the protection of foreign investments in Brazil – for this purpose I also had a study and research experience in Rio de Janeiro.

Finally, the last adventure, again offered by the Summer Institute in China, before the end of my university career has been an internship in Brussels at the Fair Trade Advocacy Office (FTAO), thanks to which I had not only the opportunity to discover the world of Fair Trade but also that of working with the European institutions (the European Parliament and the European Commission) and to interact daily in an international environment, being the only Italian in the office. I am currently dealing with international contracts in an apparel company in Italy, exploiting everyday what I learned in that unforgettable Pekinese summer.
