Looking on it now, from nowadays perspective, the experience that I made in China was one of the mostinstructive ones I have ever had: starting from the moment I learned about the Summer Law Institute, struggles to get the financial support to get to China and the stay there, and everything I have learned and gained as experience there.

I found out about this program through a colleague of mine from Armenia, who I can call a friend now, and who I met during my Master studies of the Intellectual Property Law. At that time, I met international students because I attended a joined degree program of my faculty and the University of Strasbourg.

After I filled in an online application on the Summer Law Institute website, on my enormous pleasure, I was accepted attend the program. At the same moment, my struggle in looking for funds for my stay in China began. After sending countless number of e-mails and applications for any kind of financial help to domestic and foreign institutions and foundations, and receiving their rejection or even no reply, I exhausted all of my means and I took some loans.

At the same time, I applied for a tuition waiver provided by the Summer Law Institute. Finally, I was awarded by the partial tuition waiver which was very helpful, and I am immensely grateful for that.

At the beginning, my reason for applying for this program was specially the intellectual property rights curriculum. But how surprised I was to discover the other curriculum topics: environment, climate change, sustainable development and energy. They are actually very interesting for me as well and I consider focusing on them in my professional future.

The lectures where diversified and the guest lecturers gave a very nice insight into their field of work. I was especially impressed by the professors that come from the universities in Canada and Costa Rica, who gave lectures on Internet Law and Humans Rights respectively.

Beijing (and China in general) is a place that I would recommend for everyone to visit. It is a completely different experience from any other that I have had before, whether from the point of culture, atmosphere and people, something totally different from Macedonia and the rest of Europe as well.

The Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China and the Beijing Olympic Park where the Olympic Games took place in 2008 are places that impressed me strongly and remained deeply in my memory. However, none of this would be so impressive if I was not surrounded by people to share it with. I am pleased to say I have made a couple of friends that I am still in touch with.

I am really glad I was able to participate to this Summer Institute, despite all the difficulties I had faced at the beginning, and that I was able to visit Beijing and China. This experience will remain in my memory because of the people that I have met due to the program participation, and of course because of China itself and the Chinese people.
